Glaciers comprise of fallen snow that, over many years, compresses into big, thickened ice masses. Glaciers form when snow stays in one place long enough to transform into ice. Due to absolute mass, glaciers flow like rivers that are really slow.
At Present, glaciers occupy about 10 percent of the total land area of the world, with most situated in polar areas like the Canadian Arctic, Greenland, and Antarctica. Glaciers can be considered as remnants from the last Ice Age, when ice covered 30 percent of the oceans, and almost 32 percent of the land. Most glaciers lie within mountain ranges that reveal more recent signs of retreat in the previous few centuries, and signs of a considerably greater extent during the ice ages of the previous two million years.
An Ice Age happens when cool temperatures last for prolonged intervals, enabling polar ice to progress into lower latitudes.
